TIPS

3 Steps for Emergency Preparedness

1.  Get a kit.

  • Water:  one gallon per person per day.
  • Food: non-perishable/high protein items, ready-to-eat soups, energy bars, peanut butter, etc. - foods that require no refrigeration or cooking
  • Radio: include extra batteries or use hand-crank radio.  In Posey County, tune to WIKY at 104.1 FM.
  • First Aid Kit: include list of medications family members need with dosages and a quick first aid reference guide.
  • Flashlight: remember extra batteries or use a hand crank flashlight.
  • Medications: both prescription and non-prescription items.
  • Additional items to think about including: tools, clothing, personal items, sanitary supplies, pet supplies, money (have cash), contact information (remember cell phones may not work so have a written list, and maps.

Store supplies in easy-to-carry containers in a place that is easily accessible.

2.  Make a plan.

  • Talk with your family about the disasters that can happen in this area of the country.
  • Know the designated meeting areas for both your family and the community.  Community meeting areas for Posey County are your local township fire stations.
  • Know where the utility shut-offs are and how to use them.
  • Tell everyone in your family where emergency supplies are stored.
  • Practice your plan.
  • Include pets in your plan.

3.  Be informed.

  • Learn the types of disasters that can occur in Posey County and how to be prepared for those that will affect your family as well as those that affect the entire community (tornadoes, extreme winter weather, earthquakes).
  • Know how to find out important information during a time of emergency.  This includes what radio station to listen to and where to meet in the community to find the latest information.
  • Learn what you can do to prepare for disasters such as knowing basic first aid, CPR and how to recognize the need for emergency help.
  • Share your knowledge with that of your neighbors.  Help them to become informed.
